Concours d’Elegance 2010

A Concours d’Elegance (from French meaning a competition of elegance, lit. “concourse of excellence”, referring to the gathering of prestigious cars) dates back to 17th Century French aristocracy, who paraded horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris during Summer weekends and holidays. Over time, carriages became horseless and the gatherings became a competition among automobile owners to be judged on the appearance of their automobiles.

All those months of planning and work and suddenly, it’s here.  It’s October 1 and the 2010 Pikes Peak Concours d’Elegance is off and running.

The event seems to take on a life of it’s own and moves smoothly and efficiently; the cocktail party in a picture-perfect setting, dinner with old and new friends with lots of things to talk about and, as quickly as it began, day one is over.

Day 2 begins very early, cool and quiet, but with that subtle underlying urgency of knowing there’s plenty of work yet to be done.

Familiar faces begin arriving amid the smell of hot coffee and warm bagels.  Soon, lots of beautiful automobiles grace the recently vacated parking lot.  For some of these Jaguars, this event is a homecoming as this lot was once their home – a fitting place to be judged as they continue their journey through the years and miles.

As the sun continues to rise, the British Motoring Festival also moves into full swing. Lots of British and U.K. motoring history arrives, some familiar, some new to this show, but all interesting.

10:00 A.M. and the Red Noland fire truck horn and siren announce the judges meeting and the show begins.

Each vehicle is carefully scrutinized and evaluated.  Very little will get past these judges, many whom have years of

experience under their belts.  There is also a group of new, less experienced judges, getting their training from some of the best. All too quickly, the morning ends and a small group of Jaguars line up for the afternoon drive, the second of Jack’s finely executed Concours parades.  This year, the route is through the Air Force Academy to gaze upon mile after mile of football fan’s vehicles lining both sides of Stadium Boulevard.  Today it’s Air Force versus Navy – an event close to the hearts of a number of the Concours participants.

After the Air Force Academy, the parade of motorized elegance heads south, to the Garden of the Gods Visitor’s Center and a photo-op!

After the much needed break,  the group heads through the Garden of the Gods into Manitou Springs and back to Jaguar, Colorado Springs.

The smell of barbecued beef and chicken fills the air and suddenly, it’s dinner and awards time.  Every one is tired and slightly sunburned, but there’s a smile on each face with the satisfaction gained from a “job well done”.

It’s 8:00 P.M and Concours 2010 is over.  It’s been a glorious event in a marvelous setting with wonderful weather and great friends.     Truly, another classic chapter in the Jaguar life style.
